Adelanto, San Bernardino County
West of Adelanto the desert opens onto El Mirage Dry Lake, a flat, hard lakebed where land-speed racers have timed their cars since the 1940s and where off-road riders now have a federal recreation area. The city itself grew quickly after 2000 as new subdivisions spread along Highway 395, the main route north toward the Eastern Sierra.
